Antlion

The antlion is a fascinating insect that can be found in many countries across the globe. It is best-known for its predatory habits, with ants being a major part of its diet - hence its descriptive name.

In Africa, we know this creature best for the small funnel-like holes that its larvae (the juvenile form of an insect) digs in the sand. These holes are used to trap unsuspecting prey. The antlion waits at its base, hidden under the sand - ready to snatch any victims that fall in with its enormous, powerful jaws.

A Day in the Life

Antlion adults are flying insects, with beautiful net-like wings. The adult only lives one or two days before perishing.

Legendary Status

Antlions have been referenced in literature as far back as classical antiquity (8th century BC - 5th century AD)!

One Big Happy Family

There are over 2000 species of antlion and they are found in most parts of the world - with the greatest diversity in warmer areas.

Ambush Predators

Not all antlion larvae use sand traps, some hide under leaf litter or on rocks to ambush unsuspecting insects. Once they have captured their prey, they inject it with venom and enzymes in order to digest it.
